St. Helena Island
The heart of the Gullah community.
This community features restaurants that serve authentic Gullah fare rich with local seafood and produce. Gullah descendants carry on the African culture, most noticeably with their signature, intricately woven sweetgrass baskets. Look for roadside stands in the Frogmore area of the island.
Penn Center
Birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
The Penn Center Served as the country’s first school for freed slaves and later played a role in the Civil Rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reportedly began his “I Have A Dream” speech at the center. Today, this oak-shaded compound of wooden cabins and community buildings offer educational and cultural programs related to the history of the Sea Islands.
Harbor Island
Just across the bridge from downtown Beaufort.
This small resort island located 14 miles east of Beaufort, South Carolina. It is one of the Carolina Sea Islands and the majority of the island is tidal marsh, though approximately 800 acres of upland acreage exist on the northeastern portions of the island.
The island was uninhabited and used primarily as hunting grounds until the 1930s, when US Highway 21 was constructed to connect Saint Helena Island with Hunting Island State Park.
A swing drawbridge carry crossing the Harbor River connects the island to Saint Helena Island towards the west. A small causeway crossing Johnson Creek connects Harbor Island with Hunting Island towards the south.
Fripp Island
The most seaward of South Carolina’s barrier islands.
Fripp boasts a 3-1/2 mile beach with wide expanses of soft sand and spectacular ocean vistas as far as the eye can see.
